comprehensive reviews of everything i watched in between LA and Michigan yesterday
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (in-flight movie)
I loved every single minute of this. So much fighting! Black Widow doing impressive stuff! A villain who’s an old white man! No real romantic subplot! I love action movies so much and increasingly love the Marvel movies and for some reason don’t find Steve Rogers insufferable even though it seems like he should be. Maybe because we aren’t expected to think of him as a tortured antihero bad boy, which seems so common and which I am so tired of. Also the last five minutes of this movie are 100% just a scene from 2004’s Hellboy? What is HAPPENING ugh it’s so great.
Community (available in-flight)
I had never really watched the earlier episodes of this show, which I guess is what there was. Ken Jeong is a Spanish teacher and not a tyrannical security guard? It was still a little saccharine and I am disturbed by how successful this show is in making me like Joel McHale’s character when I think he’s objectively gross, but whatever. I thought about it a lot and think I am probably Troy, if I had to pick. ALSO Danny Pudi has a bit part in Captain America so it really all came full circle.
MisSpelled (available here!)
I had read about this webseries on tumblr and had been meaning to watch it and decided that my long late-night layover in DTW was the time, as our flight time kept getting pushed back later and later to midnight, and the teenage girl next to me talked on the phone about how she was “cool with” lesbians or whatever but “didn’t need to” see them kissing and also expressed concern about being in a “ghetto” neighborhood. ANYHOW I like this show a lot! I am glad I watched the “promologue” before the pilot because I didn’t realize how much it really just sort of jumps right in there, plotwise. I am 110% sold on the premise of this show and the acting seems really solid, and also the effects are surprisingly good. I would go ahead and say the special effects are significantly better than, say, Warehouse 13’s. Anyways so far this is like Practical Magic meets Pretty Little Liars and if that doesn’t sound amazing to you then you’re dead to me. I really hope someone on it turns out to be queer.
I tried to watch this in the gate but my silverlight plugin wasn’t working. Probably the patriarchy at work, etc.
